Infections in piercings aren't as common as you may think! Most commonly, those bumps or bubbles are actually due to irritation.
In order to get the bump to go away, you need to eliminate the source of irritation. Most online sources will advise the use of tea tree oil, crushed up aspirin, or some other wild remedy; however, we don't suggest any of these homemade concoctions!
Irritation can be a result of several culprits, including the quality of your jewelry, improper aftercare, ill-fitting jewelry, moisture build up, trauma to the area (snagging it, sleeping on it, etc.), and in some cases, could be from a poorly done piercing.
You can also try warm compresses:
Wash your hands and then saturate a piece of gauze with sterile saline, or we also recommend bottled water. Warm the gauze in the microwave for 10-15 seconds. Hold this up to the piercing; the heat will soothe any swelling and tenderness. Leave the saline gauze against the piercing until it cools, then rinse the piercing. Always dry the piercing after soaking or any cleaning. Do this at least once a day for one week. Never move the jewelry back and forth through the piercing. Likewise, do not twist or rotate jewelry in the piercing. Excessive movement can cause irritation and issues while the piercing is healing.
If you are worried, please reach out to your piercer (or us) so that you can be advised as to what the next steps should be!
Initially, you will be pierced with a post that has excess length to accommodate for swelling. Once this swelling has subsided, that post can be replaced with one more fitted to your body! Having a shorter post installed helps to eliminate excess movement and reduces the incidence of trauma to the area. While not all piercings require downsizing, most do!
Generally, we recommend downsizing within the first 4-6 weeks after your initial piercing; however, this ultimately depends on both the location of your piercing (some piercings take longer!) and how you're healing.
We do NOT accept any sort of outside jewelry. We have a strict set of guidelines that we follow in regards to jewelry quality and are unable to verify the materials that said outside jewelry may be composed of.
We suggest waiting a minimum of 3 months before submerging your fresh piercing in any bodies of water. This includes oceans, intercoastals, hot tubs, jacuzzies, lakes, springs, swimming pools, etc. While salt water may be good for your piercings, the bacteria in these bodies of water (and pools) is not!
We do not use any sort of numbing agents prior to piercing. Numbing cream typically takes quite some time to work and only affects the top few layers of the skin; this means that it will not penetrate deep enough to prevent you from feeling the piercing. Additionally, numbing cream can affect the structure and texture of the skin, as well as cause unnecessary swelling.
